Summer Fun Writing Contest

Summer Fun Writing Contest

Welcome to the Summer Fun Writing Contest!

Summer is a great time to get outside, enjoy some sun, and relax with your favorite cold beverage. It is also a great time of year to get some writing done, especially for those of us in school who have the time off.

The one issue with summer is the lack of deadlines to give lazy writers like me no motivation to get some words on the page. Luckily the Summer Fun Writing Contest is here to give motivation in the form of a deadline and the chance to win a 25 dollar gift card to Barnes and Noble

All you have to do is write a short story or flash fiction relating to summer. There is no cost to enter! All you need to do is submit your entry. There will be a place to do that at the bottom of this post when you are ready.

The Prompt

The prompt of this contest is quite simple. All you have to do is write and submit a short story or flash fiction piece related to summer. All submissions should be under 5,000 words. For a submission to be counted it must be entered by August 18, 2021. If there is an issue with submitting or you are unsure if yours went through feel free to reach out on Instagram or email me.

The prompt has been left broad to encourage as many people to enter as possible. So long as summer or elements of summer are included in your entry it will adhere to guidelines. It does not have to be a focus point. Some subtle ways to incorporate summer into a story are featuring a brighter and hotter setting or having your story take place during a vacation.

If you are struggling to find some inspiration here is a list of prompts that can get you started. You do not need to use any of these. They are simply there to help you if you need it.

  1. Write a Pirate Adventure.
  2. Choose an ocean setting. Write a story that takes place under the sea!
  3. Write a vacation gone wrong.
  4. Tell the tale of a character stranded on an island.
  5. Tell ghost stories by the campfire.
  6. Write a summer camp adventure.
  7. Describe a romance by the beach.
  8. Write about baseball, beach volleyball, or any summer sport.
  9. Write a story where the main character despises summer.
  10. Tell a treasure hunt.
  11. Write a story about a boat. Trouble at sea can be exciting.
  12. Write a camping trip gone wrong.
  13. Tell a story about stargazing.
  14. Write from the POV of a fish.
  15. Write about a character that makes a wish amongst the summer stars.

These are by no means the only things you can write about. They are just some fun prompts to help you out. Also note, while fun is in the name you do not have to write a fun story. It can be as upbeat or depressing as you want it to be.

The Rules

The most important rule to take note of is that all submissions are due on August 18. Any submissions received after that date will not be entered. You may submit as many entries as you’d like so long as you make sure they are well edited. Any submission with too many glaring errors will also not be accepted so be sure to edit. If you are unsure, run it through Grammarly.

If you are uncomfortable sharing your name on your entry you may fill in the name column as anonymous. Be sure you include your email, as it will be used to contact the winner. Do not forget to set the post category for your submission as the Summer Fun Writing Contest. The genre options on the submission link are for writing book reviews.

The main winner will be determined by three judges. They are me, @memesforwriters on Instagram, @everything.writing, and @tips.for.writers. Our accounts are hosting this contest so if you have any questions feel free to contact us. Also if you are not already be sure to follow all three accounts to avoid missing any updates on the contest.

The winner selected by the judges will win a 25 dollar Barnes and Noble gift card. The winner will be selected on the final day of August.

To encourage more reader participation there will also be a follower vote. Hosted on Instagram anyone will be able to read the entries and vote for their favorite. The entries with the most votes will receive Instagram shoutouts. The number of shoutouts available will be announced later on Instagram depending on the number of entries.

All entries will be submitted on this site under the writing contest menu on August 18. You will be allowed to share the link to your entry as you please. Do not be afraid to insert the link to your story on your bio or insert it on your story. The more participation the contest vote gets the better.

Note for the shoutout votes the entry will be posted on the site in the order they were submitted. The earlier you submit the higher your story will feature. However, this will only influence the Instagram vote for shoutout winners.

The winners for shoutouts and the 25 dollar prize are completely different. One will not influence the other. Your votes will not influence the judges. The winners for both will be announced on the final day of August.

If you have the time to create a submission I strongly encourage you to enter this contest. It costs nothing and you can end up winning a 25 dollar Barnes and Noble gift card and or a shoutout. At the very least you can gain confidence from creating a submission. It will be a good experience.

All submissions that fit the guidelines will be posted on the site. It is a great way to get your work out there for the rest of the community to see.

Keep in mind, if you decide not to enter this contest I still urge you to check out the other submissions. Remember to set the post category to the Summer Fun Writing Contest and include your email. To keep up with all updates be sure to subscribe to my email list.

Good luck! I look forward to reading your entries.
